Jinny McGivern
PT, DPT, CFMT
Jinny McGivern, PT, DPT, CFMT is thrilled to be a part of the team at Kfmt! Since receiving her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Hunter College in 2014, Jinny has dedicated herself to extensive study of Functional Manual Therapy, including completing a two-year orthopedic residency program in this approach through the Institute of Physical Art (IPA).
In August 2016, she achieved the level of Certified Functional Manual Therapist (CFMT) through the IPA becoming one of only 300 people nationally to have reached this level of training.
After certification, Jinny joined the faculty of the IPA as an instructor for the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation 1 (PNF 1) course. In addition to teaching with the IPA, Jinny serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Hunter College PT Department and as a guest lecturer in the Long Island University PT Department.
As a former dancer with a B.F.A in Dance Performance, Jinny brings a lifelong interest and diverse background in movement to the practice of physical therapy. In addition to her dance background and experience, Jinny completed a 500-hour yoga certification through YogaWorks and taught classes through The Ailey Extension. Jinny recently completed a Pilates mat certification through the Kane School. Jinny periodically teaches pop up classes and workshops at the Kinected Center that focus on connecting how specific exercises can be used to improve functional movement.
The Functional Manual Therapy approach resonates strongly with Jinny because of its emphasis on treatment of the entire individual, rather than just an injured body part. Jinny's goal as a physical therapist is to help her clients achieve their fullest function as quickly as possible, whether you're somebody who wants to be able to get out of bed without pain or somebody who wants to return to high level dancing or sport. Jinny uses a combination of manual therapy, muscle facilitation techniques, exercise, body mechanics training and patient education to help her clients uncover new options for movement and achieve their fullest potential. When she is not in the clinic, she is usually exploring functional movement while chasing her very active 5-year-old son.
